Shimano Shadow+ rear derailleurs use a clutch system to stabilise the cage that supports your chain in order to prevent your chain from slapping around and causing damage to your frame, and from dropping off your chainring.

Because these units are friction devices, they need maintenance to run smoothly and not ‘catch’. Replacement stabiliser units are an easy fix and combined with some thorough cleaning of the plate axle and the re-application of Shimano’s special Shadow+ RD grease, you’ll have your clutch running smooth and doing what it’s meant to do rather than inhibiting your drivetrain from shifting smoothly.
